Tree Planting Commemorates King Charles’s Coronation

Sutton on Sea Gardening group volunteers planted a tree to commemorate King Charles’s Coronation on St. George’s Day, 23rd May 2024 with our Mayor Paul Russell making the first dig.

They chose a Sorbus Commixta Olympic Flame (also known as the Japanese Rowan and Mountain Ash), which is a deciduous tree.  In 20 years, this tree will grow to around 6 metres high by 3.5 metres wide.  In the early Spring bronze leaves appear, turning green in the Summer.  In May the blossom appears and in the Autumn the leaves turn orange and red with bright red berries in October which will last into the winter – if the birds don’t eat them all.  The group understands that this is also a favourite of the King.

Later in the year they will be burying a “time capsule” which we hope the local children will help put together.
