The Different Light Collective is ready to launch this years’ Spilsby Light Night which organisers say will be on a larger scale than the original event and looks set to engage many more people.
The event itself will be held at sites across the centre of Spilsby on the evening of Saturday 7 March from 5pm to 9pm and thanks to funding from Arts Council England, together with local support from East Lindsey District Council, Spilsby Town Council and a number of local businesses, will be completely free.
On Wednesday 12 February at the Methodist Chapel in Spilsby, the Different Light Collective will be holding a Launch Event from 5.30pm to 7pm to which anyone is welcome to attend, though the organisers request that people intending to go along email them first hello@different-light.co.uk so they have an idea of numbers. The launch will include detailed information about the content of the Night with some images and videos, along with the chance to find out how to get involved as a volunteer. Two professional artists will be showing people how to decorate jars for the T Light project and the Different Light Collective will also be handing out flyers & posters for people to spread around the town and surrounding area and staff and volunteers at the Methodist Church will be offering refreshments.
Simon Hollingworth, Creative Producer of Spilsby Light Night and a member of the Different Light Collective is looking forward to sharing the plans and ideas for the 2020 Light Night and is delighted with the level of community and business interest in the project: “We have been so pleased by the degree of energy and excitement in the idea of the Light Night. Wherever we go people seem really engaged and just want it to succeed, which is extremely gratifying for all of us who have been working hard to bring something really special to the town on the night of Saturday 7 March. As well as significant funding from Arts Council England we have been delighted to have been offered help from ELDC and Spilsby Town Council, as well as support from a number of local businesses, including J&A International, The Greenhouse, Tinn Criddle, Sills & Betteridge, Tong Engineering and the Spilsby Business Partnership”.
Bruce Knight is also a member of the Different Light Collective but is better known locally as the Director of The Sessions House (Spilsby Theatre). “The Light Night is a brilliant project for the town and is really helping raise our profile regionally. It’s so good to be able to offer new ways of engaging with local schools and community groups and all of the activity chimes perfectly for us at the Sessions House with our aim to be at the cultural heart of the area”.
What we know about this year’s Light Night already is that the format will be similar to last year’s event with a ‘light trail’ taking place at key venues across the town, but that this time a larger number of professional artists will be sharing their work alongside smaller moments created by the Different Light Collective’s own Creative Technician, Andy Johnson-Smith.
Will Lindley will be showing a new piece on the front of the Methodist Church, the Illumaphonium, an interactive LED xylophone, will be positioned near the statue of Sir John Franklin, digital artist Barret Hodgson has been commissioned to create a new video piece onto the front of the Sessions House and inside St James’ Church there will be an interactive sound & light installation called the Celestial Sound Cloud. There will also be a community lantern parade and a digital dance performance at Woodlands Academy. More details of all of these will be announced at the Light Night launch on 12 February.
