Protecting Your Privacy Online
If you are concerned about privacy, the most important thing to do is avoid giving your personal data to companies who’s business model is to collect and monetise it. This is most often done while using services they provide for free and the obvious culprits are Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and indeed all the social networks.
Here are some tips to improve your privacy online:
- Avoid using social networks
- Use Apple phones and tablets instead of those running Google Android
- Use a privacy focused search engine like DuckDuckGo instead of Google
- Use a privacy focused email provider and avoid using Google Mail (Gmail)
- Avoid using the Google Chrome web browser, but opt for one of the non-advertising agency owned alternatives like Safari (on Apple devices) or the excellent, but often forgotten, Firefox
- Avoid using services based in Russia, China or the EU whose rulers either have, or plan to have, access to all user’s data
- If you are concerned, that your ISP maybe tracking the sites you visit via the domains names it is resolving for you, set your router to use a privacy focused DNS server like Quad9 DNS (9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112). And NEVER use Google’s DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)
- Serious privacy fans will also want to hide their IP address from the sites they visit by accessing them via a VPN such as Private Internet Access
- When messaging, use an app with end-to-end encryption like Signal. Avoid using Facebook Messenger.
- Never sign in to another website using your Facebook or Google account etc
