Colonnade and Beach Huts Update

East Lindsey District Council has provided an update to the situation regarding the colonnade, Pleasure Gardens and beach huts. A transcription follows.

Sutton on Sea Colonnade and Pleasure Gardens

Then

The Colonnade has been a defining landmark in Sutton on Sea since the 1930s. Following the flood of 1953 the Colonnade was rebuilt and shortly after the Pleasure Gardens were laid out by landscape architect and author, Dame Sylvia Crowe.

Now

Structural issues with the Colonnade were identified in April 2018.

Put simply, the issues relate to the age and design of the Colonnade, which over time has resulted in the progressive weakening of the reinforcement within the concrete and the concrete itself. It is understood from engineers that this type of issue is fairly typical on structures built this way during the 1950/60s. The structure is not part of the sea defence.

East Lindsey District Council and Mablethorpe & Sutton Town Council launched a consultation with the community to help shape a vision for the Colonnade area and Pleasure Gardens, with those participating informing the council that future plans for the area should include a new Colonnade structure, Beach Huts, a flexible space and a cafe-restaurant with educational facilities linked to the coastline and a roof top terrace as a high level viewing platform.

Next Steps

With a vision for the area confirmed, East Lindsey District Council is now able to turn the vision into detailed proposals prior to a further round of public consultation later in 2019. Partners will work together to identify what funding might be available to deliver the vision.

Please note the Paddling Pool will remain open to the community.
