Storm Ciara inflicts devastation to Burgh’s Dobson’s Mill

Statement from Mayor Cllr Neil Cooper

Dobson’s Mill & Heritage Centre: I would just like to say a big thank you to all the people of Burgh le Marsh for their support at this devastating time. We have to take a long-term view of this as the damage is not confined to the mill itself, which is significant, but the granary building has taken a big hit including the eastern end of the main building. It will now be up to LCC to come up with a solution. Other than closing the mill site down, they will be loath to do anything else, I would suggest. A big thank you to the Fire Brigade and The Police for their efficient handling of the emergency, to Trad Millwrights for their attendance and help, the restaurant staff for helping to clear up the car park and to Jimmy Brookes and Andy Cooper for helping with the Heritage display removals. I think I have covered everyone but if I missed you from the list, thank you. 175 years of our heritage gone.

Comment from Dobson’s Mill

the cap is in a million pieces, the brakewheel is in half, the cross is shattered, all of the sails are gone, broken like matchsticks, all of the shutters are snapped, the wind shaft looks to be damaged – do I need to add any more? looking at 5 years and £500,000.

Amended poem by Sylvia Blight

At the entrance to our village
The windmill proudly stood,
Was Towering, Beckoning, Welcoming
Resurrection needed, it really should.

Alas storm Ciara
Inflicted her deadly blow
Decapitated and shattered
It really shouldn’t be so.

Our giant, once industrious
Can be so yet again,
To get the millstones turning
We must submit our claim!
